Travelling to argentiÈre

Argentiere railway station

Travel Alternatives

The village lies approximately 75-90 minutes drive from Geneva Airport. Although this is the route many take, it is not the only option available:

By Rail -

The village lies on the meter-gauge St Gervais-Vallorcine-Martigny line. Martigny is roughly 17 km away, over the Swiss border, Saint-Gervais-du-Bains is approximately 32 km away and is the nearest SNCF mainline station; the journey from Paris to St Gervais takes five hours.

The village stop, Argentière Haute Savoie, is only 200 m from the Grands Montets cable car. The staff on this line have a good reputation and are always willing to assist people booking onward travel.

By Road -

  • A40 to N205 (Autoroute Blanche) from Geneva via Sallanches
  • Tunnel du Mont Blanc N205 from Italy's E25 / A5 from Aosta via Courmayeur
  • N506 from Switzerland's route 203 (via Martigny)

Please note that snow tyres or chains can be very useful (and occasionally obligatory) in bad weather for the climb up to Argentiere.

By Bus -

The Chamonix valley has an extensive network of bus routes, allowing you to sample runs all over the valley. Buses run from the Argentière Grands Montets stop at approximately fifteen minute intervals during the day, and there is a good evening service to and from Chamonix itself.

Shared Shuttle -

There are a number of companies operating in and around Chamonix that offer door-to-door minibus transfers from most airports in the region. With all of them you have the option of booking either a private transfer or a more economical "shared" one, where up to 8 people arriving around the same time travel to resort together. From Geneva, the cost one way is approximately €40 (per person) for a shared transfer. Booking in advance is definitely recommended as you cannot guarantee to just pick up a transfer at the airport.

Car hire -

Car hire is best done from the "french side" of Geneva Airport and if there are several people travelling, it is not always an expensive option. Try Holiday Autos for some of the best searches and rental prices, or for more information on driving in Chamonix and getting here by road, take a look at our driving FAQ

Taxi -

For up to 4 people a taxi will cost approximately €150 from Geneva (or 300CHF if you get a taxi at the door). For more than 4 people the cost will obviously be higher for a larger vehicle but probably cheaper per person.
