Chamonix Valley

The Chamonix Valley in France is a popular winter sports destination with some of the best skiing runs in the world. The first ever Winter Olympics were held here in 1924. The area is dominated by Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe, and attracts thousands of mountaineer-tourists each year. It is also a mecca for skiing and snowboarding, with six separate ski areas including Le Brévent (a short but steep walk from the centre of Chamonix), La Flégère (at Les Praz), Les Planards (ski area for beginners and early intermediates), Les Grands Montets (at Argentière ) and Domaine de Balme (at Le Tour ). Many of these provide wonderful terrain, especially off-piste , with runs down to Switzerland.

Skiing in Argentière

Argentière is located near the head of the valley of Chamonix at an altitude of 1252m (4101 ft). A pass over the Col des Montets connects it with Switzerland and a similar pass over the Col de la Forclaz connects it to Martigny in the Rhône valley. Argentière is the starting point for the cable car up to Lognan and Les Grands Montets (3295m), a skiing area famous for its steep and demanding slopes, both on-piste as well as off-piste. In total, the skiing area is served by 1 cable car (2 sections), 1 gondola, 5 chair-lifts and some skilifts. All of these combine to make this an area which is also suitable for disabled skiers, for whom the Chamonix Tourist Board has made special provision.

Les Grands Montets provides the perfect skiing venue for intermediate to expert skiers. There are 3020 m of blue runs, 10150 m of red runs and 11350 m of black runs. There are also off piste runs (marked in orange on the map) which should only be attempted in the company of an experienced guide. The beginning skier will find Les Chosalets piste ideal for gaining their confidence, perhaps with an eye to moving on to the blue runs. There is also a half pipe available for snowboarders.

Argentière also has a ski club for children, which provides a very comprehensive child care service.
